Move Forward: You Can’t Drive Forward While Looking in the Rearview Mirror

Philippians 3:13-14:
“Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Jeremiah 29:11:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

TL;DR: You can’t move forward while fixating on the past. Leave behind what holds you back and press on toward God’s plan for your life. Live in hope, trusting that He is leading you to something greater.

Can you truly drive forward while looking in the rearview mirror? No! The same is true in life—if we constantly focus on past mistakes, regrets, or hurts, we won’t move ahead into the future God has prepared for us.

Today, I’m evaluating what belongs in my rearview mirror and what I need to keep in my windshield. To be healthy and well—spiritually, emotionally, and physically—I must eagerly look forward to what God has planned for me.

When I shift my focus forward, I begin to live in hope. Philippians 3:13-14 reminds us to forget what is behind and press on toward the goal. It’s a choice to release the past and embrace the future God is calling us to.

If I ever start dwelling on the past, I remind myself of Jeremiah 29:11:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

If God has plans for my future, why am I worrying about the past?

Five minutes ago is just as over as fifty years ago. Let it go. The past is done, but your future is unfolding. God is using everything you’ve been through to lead you toward His purpose.

Today, be inspired to look forward with hope. Keep your eyes on Jesus, trust in His calling, and press on toward His promises. Move forward in faith—because your best days are still ahead!
