False Gods: Let the One True God Take His Rightful Place

Jeremiah 16:20
“Do men make their own gods? Yes, but they are not gods!”

TL;DR: Anything we turn to for security, comfort, or control—other than God—can quietly become a false god in our lives. People, habits, even emotions like fear or worry, can take His place. But only the one true God is powerful enough to carry us through every situation, especially the ones that break us.

Lately, I’ve been doing some honest reflection.
And what I’ve found is this: I’ve let some false gods sneak into my life.

Not golden calves or carved idols, but things far more subtle—approval, control, worry, fear.
For me, one of the biggest temptations is seeking security in what people think of me. I find myself trying to please others, thinking that if I have their acceptance, I’ll be okay.

But the truth is, no person can fill the role that only God is meant to have.

When crisis hits, when I’m afraid for someone I love, when life feels unsteady—it’s not approval or control or self-reliance I turn to.
It’s Jesus.
He’s the one I cry out to.
He’s the one who hears.
He’s the only one who can step in and actually do something eternal.

Jeremiah 16:20 cuts straight to the heart:
“Do men make their own gods? Yes, but they are not gods!”

Today, maybe it’s time to ask:
What or who have I elevated in my heart above the Lord?
What am I trusting more than God?
What am I clinging to that can’t hold me up in my worst moments?

False gods don’t always look like idols.
They can be:

  • The obsession with being liked

  • A numbing habit like alcohol or shopping

  • Fear, anxiety, or even overworking

  • Codependency—relying on someone else to feel whole

None of these will sustain us.
None of these will save us.
Only God can be God in your life.

Today, let Him take His rightful place. Let go of the substitutes. He’s strong enough, faithful enough, and loving enough to be all you need.
