Be a Good Soldier: Compete According to God’s Rules

2 Timothy 2:3-5
“Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs—he wants to please his commanding officer. Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor’s crown unless he competes according to the rules.”

TL;DR:

Being a good soldier of Christ means living by God’s truth, not the world’s standards. Sin may be acceptable to culture, but it’s never healthy for the soul. Avoid it, walk in His forgiveness, and pursue holiness.

Paul tells us to endure hardship like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. Soldiers are focused, disciplined, and committed to pleasing their commanding officer. As believers, our Commander is Christ.

But here’s the question: Are we competing according to God’s rules, or letting sin reign?

In today’s world, sexual immorality, cheating, gossip, complaining, and slander are often brushed aside as normal—even acceptable. But Scripture calls them what they are: sin. And sin is destructive—not just spiritually, but emotionally and physically.

The good news? We are forgiven because of the powerful gift of Jesus. His sacrifice sets us free and keeps us healthy in heart and spirit. But part of being a good soldier is also learning to avoid sin in the first place—choosing holiness over compromise.

Walking in His forgiveness and striving to live by His truth is how we stay strong, healthy, and ready for battle.

So today, let’s compete according to the rules. Let’s live not for the approval of culture, but to please our Commanding Officer—Christ Jesus.
