Praise or Unwholesome Talk? Choose Words That Give Life

Ephesians 4:29
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouth, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

TL;DR:

Negative self-talk and unwholesome words steal our joy. When we choose to think well, speak well, and praise God—even in hard times—we shift our focus from what’s wrong to everything that is right.

Yesterday, I had a follow-up appointment for my leg surgery. The news wasn’t great: the infection is still present and bone healing is only mild. I left disappointed and teary, drowning in negative self-talk.

Here’s the truth: when we allow unwholesome thoughts and words to dominate, they become toxic, stealing the joy God has set before us.

But in the same day, I was blessed with the arrival of my first granddaughter. She is beautiful, perfect, and such a precious gift from God. Why would I focus on anything other than her beauty and blessing? Yet, that’s what happens—we often dwell on what’s wrong and forget to fully enjoy everything that is right.

Ephesians 4:29 reminds us to choose our words carefully. Let’s speak life, not death. Let’s focus on what builds up, not what tears down. And let’s remember: think well, speak well, live well.

No matter what challenges you’re facing today, there are always reasons to be thankful. Let’s shift our focus from unwholesome talk to words of praise.

Praise God—always!
