Your Sleep Will Be Sweet: Trusting God With Your Work and Rest

Psalm 127:1-3
“Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stands guard in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for He grants sleep to those He loves.”

TL;DR:

True peace and rest don’t come from overworking but from trusting God. When He builds our lives, our labor has purpose, and He grants us sweet, restorative sleep.

“Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain.”

Wow, does that ever hit home! So many times, I’ve tried to build things in my own strength, only to see them fall apart. Jesus reminds us in Matthew 11:30, “My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” When I choose His yoke, even the hardest work carries peace instead of pressure.

But when I push harder, skip rest, and think my productivity depends only on me, everything suffers. Poor sleep health is responsible for so many of our physical, emotional, and even spiritual struggles. God designed rest as part of His rhythm for our lives. Ignoring that is not strength—it’s self-destruction.

One of the toughest disciplines for me has been getting consistent, quality sleep. Yet it’s also one of the most beneficial for my overall health and wellness. Skipping sleep to work more doesn’t produce more fruit—it actually makes me less effective.

Today, let’s surrender our striving and trust God to “build the house” and “watch over the city.” Let’s honor Him not just in our work, but also in our rest. For He promises this: He grants sleep to those He loves. Sweet, peaceful, restorative sleep.
