Proverbs 22:13
“The sluggard says, ‘There is a lion outside!’ or ‘I will be murdered in the streets!’”
TL;DR:
Fear can disguise itself as wisdom, keeping us from trying again. Don’t let fear stop you—God is bigger than the lion outside. Be cautious, but courageous, and keep moving forward in faith!
A sluggard is fearful—and uses that fear as an excuse not to try.
Today, I’m heading back for another round of treatment. Yesterday, the pain from the pressure in my ears was incredibly intense. When they put the tubes in, it hurt—a lot. Part of me wants to say, “There’s a lion outside!” and avoid going back.
But fear can’t be my guide.
We all have “lions” that keep us from trying again. Maybe it’s the fear of heartbreak after being hurt in a relationship. Maybe it’s a failed business venture or a past embarrassment that still stings. The enemy uses fear to whisper, “Don’t try again—it’s not worth it.”
But God calls us to courage.
I’ll never forget my first college track meet—I took dead last in the 400 meters. I almost got lapped! I could’ve quit right there. But my coach saw something I didn’t—he realized I was a distance runner. The very next meet, I ran the 1500 meters, broke the school record, and took first place.
That’s what happens when we don’t let fear win.
Never, never, never give up.
Don’t be afraid of the lion outside. Be wise, yes—but not paralyzed. Step forward in faith, and watch what God will do when you try again.
