Faith When You’re Petrified: Finding Courage in Psalm 23

Psalm 23:4
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

TL;DR:
Fear is real, but so is God’s presence. Even in moments of intense fear, His Word brings comfort and steadiness.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death…

Have you ever been petrified with fear? Yesterday I was.

We were hiking on a trail in Arizona when my friend heard a rattle and said, “That sounds like a rattler.” I yelled, “Bob! There is a snake by your feet!” He jumped back and the snake slithered away. He said, “It’s safe. The snake is curled up now under the tree.”

I did not want to go near it, but I decided to trust my friend since he knows the desert. As I walked closer, I suddenly heard a loud rattling in the tall grass beside the trail. I yelled, “We have to get out of here!” We both took off running, and I immediately started quoting Psalm 23.

In that moment, the words were not poetic. They were survival.
“I will fear no evil, for You are with me…”

Fear can grip the heart instantly. But so can faith. The valley may be real, and the danger may feel close, yet God’s presence is closer.

If fear is surrounding you today, may Psalm 23 steady your heart as it steadied mine. His rod and His staff still comfort. Even in the valley.
