Proverbs 20:3 — “It is to a man’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel.”
tl;dr: The expectations we place on romantic partners versus friends can reveal a lot about where our strife truly comes from — and letting go of those expectations is key to health and wellness.
This last weekend I was waiting for a girlfriend to pick me up from the airport. She was about a half hour late. I didn’t think much of it. I didn’t read into it. I just accepted that she was running late.
Then I thought to myself — if she were a romantic interest of mine, I would have been irritated that she was late. I would have expected my romantic interest to want to be early and excited to see me. I would have been upset if he had shown up late.
Do you hold your spouse or romantic partner to a higher level of expectation than you do your friends? Are your expectations unreasonable?
In AA we say that to be healthy and well, we need to let go of our expectations.
I hope this helps you today.
