Slave to Sin?

Romans 6:16
“Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?”

tl;dr
What is repeatedly obeyed eventually becomes a master. Freedom comes through pursuing godliness instead of feeding sinfulness.

I used to be a slave to alcohol. It was my first desire, my constant focus, and the thing I organized my life around. I am so thankful I have been freed from that overwhelming desire through the powerful gift of Jesus.

I still have addictive personality traits. Because of that, I have to actively pursue godliness over sinfulness in order to stay free from sinful obsessions. Left to myself, I can easily drift back toward unhealthy desires and destructive thinking. But when my identity is rooted in Christ, I want purity in both thought and deed. That pursuit makes life healthier, more peaceful, and more whole.

Sin promises relief, comfort, and satisfaction, but eventually it enslaves. Obedience to God may feel difficult at first, yet it leads to righteousness, freedom, and peace. What is practiced repeatedly becomes stronger. Feeding sin strengthens sin. Feeding godliness strengthens godliness.

I hope this helps today. Is there a sin creating bondage and control in life right now? No chain is too strong for Jesus to break. Seek godliness over sinfulness, and over time the sinful cravings weaken while godly desires grow stronger.

Freedom is possible through Jesus Christ.
