Go From the Worthless to the Worthwhile

Psalm 119:36-37
“Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.”

tl;dr
Peace comes when the focus shifts from selfish pursuits to God’s purposes. What is worthwhile lasts; what is worthless eventually fades away.

“Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain.”

What an honest prayer.

There are so many things competing for attention every day. Some are good things, some are distractions, and some are simply worthless in light of eternity.

The psalmist recognized something important: the heart naturally drifts toward selfish gain if it is not intentionally turned toward God.

Are we truly seeking what God wants for our lives?

Are we patiently trusting His timing?

Or are we manipulating circumstances to make our own plans succeed?

Those can be difficult questions to answer honestly.

I know there are times when I become impatient. I want things to happen according to my schedule. I want doors to open when I think they should open. Yet God’s timing is often different from mine.

When I chase selfish gain, recognition, control, or my own agenda, I usually end up restless. But when I surrender my plans and trust God’s direction, I find peace.

The worthwhile things are often the things that last: faith, love, kindness, integrity, service, and obedience to God.

The worthless things may provide temporary satisfaction, but they never truly fulfill.

Today, let’s pray like the psalmist.

“Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain.”

May God help us turn from the worthless and pursue what is truly worthwhile.
