Don’t Wear Yourself Out for Riches: Finding True Fulfillment in Faith Over Wealth

Proverbs 23:4-5 “Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have wisdom and show restraint. Cast a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.”

TL;DR: Chasing wealth and things outside of God’s will often leaves us feeling emptier than before. True, lasting fulfillment comes only from seeking God first and drinking deeply from His living water.

What do you wear yourself out for? It is a question worth sitting with honestly.

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)

If you are anything like me, you have probably chased things that turned out not to be God’s will for your life. The promotion, the number on the scale, the approval, the account balance. And when you finally got those things, they left you feeling emptier than before. That is the quiet trap of chasing wealth and worldly success — it promises fullness but consistently underdelivers.

Proverbs puts it so vividly. Riches sprout wings and fly off like an eagle. Here one moment, gone the next. When we wear ourselves out pursuing financial security or anything else above God, we are running after something that was never designed to satisfy us at the deepest level.

The good news is there is a better way to live. Seeking God first for true contentment is not just spiritual advice — it is the most practical thing you can do for your overall well-being. Only God can truly fill us to the full. His living water does not run dry, it does not depreciate, and it does not fly away.

Let Jesus fill the emptiness within, and you will never thirst again even in a drought. That is a promise worth anchoring your whole life to. Let’s be drinking His living water today and always.
