Nahum 3:1 “Woe to the city of blood, full of lies, full of plunder, never without victims!”
TL;DR: Lies are never truly harmless. Whether it is a small white lie or something bigger, someone always gets hurt. Today is a good day to pause and choose truth, even when it feels harder.
When this verse came up in reading this morning, it was impossible not to think about the real cost of lying and how even so-called white lies hurt people. That word “never” stands out: never without victims. Not sometimes. Not usually. Never.
So here is something worth sitting with today. Has your own tongue ever told a lie that hurt someone else, even unintentionally? Has someone else’s dishonesty ever landed on you and left a mark? The harm caused by dishonesty has a way of quietly rippling outward, touching people we may not have even considered in the moment.
White lies and the damage they cause are easy to dismiss. We tell ourselves it is no big deal, that we are protecting someone’s feelings, that it is just easier this way. But Scripture does not leave much room for that kind of reasoning. Every lie, big or small, produces a victim.
Today, be careful to speak truth in love no matter how much easier it might feel to look the other way or soften reality with a half-truth. Choosing honesty over deception is not always comfortable, but it is always worth it, for you and for the people around you.
