Overcoming Prejudice: What Mordecai’s Story Teaches Us About Judging Groups of People

Esther 3:4 “Day after day they spoke to him but he refused to comply. Therefore they told Hanna about it to see whether Mordecai’s behavior would be tolerated, for he had told them he was a Jew.”

TL;DR: Haman’s explosive reaction to one man’s refusal led him to condemn an entire people. It is worth asking yourself whether you have ever let one bad experience shape how you see a whole group of people.

Mordecai refused to kneel down and pay Haman honor. Haman’s response was not to confront Mordecai alone. Instead, his plan was to annihilate all Jewish people. That escalation, from one person’s behavior to condemning an entire group, is prejudice in its most dangerous form.

It is easy to read a story like this and think it has nothing to do with us. But overcoming prejudice is something most of us quietly wrestle with at some point. Have you ever had one painful experience with a person and found yourself judging an entire group of people because of it? One bad interaction, one disappointing relationship, one moment that left a mark, and suddenly a whole category of people gets filtered through that lens.

That is exactly what Haman did. And the consequences were devastating.

Take some time today to sit with this honestly. Recognizing our own bias is not easy, but it is one of the most important things we can do for our relationships, our faith, and our own hearts. Faith and personal growth go hand in hand, and this kind of self-reflection is where real growth begins.

Ask yourself: is there a group of people you have written off because of one person? It might be worth bringing that before God today.
