A Cheerful Heart Is Good Medicine: How Faith Keeps Your Joy Alive

Proverbs 17:22 “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”

TL;DR: Everyday life is full of things that can steal your joy, but keeping your eyes on Jesus, trusting God in all things, and practicing gratitude are powerful ways to protect a cheerful heart and your overall well-being.

How do you keep your heart cheerful? It is a simple question, but the answer makes all the difference in how you move through each day.

For me, staying cheerful comes down to one thing: keeping my eyes on Jesus. Every single day there are things that can steal my joy, if I let them. I try not to let them.

The way I do that is by reading the Bible daily and actually applying it to my life. There is a big difference between reading scripture and letting it take root in how you think, speak, and respond to the hard stuff. When I make that connection, it changes everything.

I also practice trusting God in all things, knowing that all things will work out for my good and His glory. That kind of trust is not always easy to hold onto, especially when life feels uncertain or slow-moving. Patience is honestly not my strong suit. But when I truly wait upon the Lord and lean into His peace, I can keep a cheerful heart even in the middle of difficult seasons.

Waiting on God with faith does not mean sitting still and doing nothing. It means releasing the outcome, choosing gratitude over anxiety, and trusting that His sovereign hand is in it all. That posture of surrender is one of the most powerful faith-based tools for emotional well-being I have ever found.

I hope this encourages you today. Look for what is right in your life, be thankful for it, stay cheerful, and remember that God’s hand is in all of it. A grateful and joyful heart is not just good for your spirit; as Proverbs reminds us, it is genuinely good medicine.
