Proverbs 31:2-5, 10-12
“O my son, O son of my womb, O son of my vows, do not spend your strength on women, your vigor on those who ruin kings. It is not for kings, O Lemuel—not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer, lest they drink and forget what the law decrees, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights. … A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.”Genesis 2:18
“The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.'”
TL;DR:
A wise mother urges her son to live righteously, avoid destructive habits, and choose a spouse of noble character. Proverbs 31 not only guides men in their choices—it inspires women to live as women of virtue.
What does a mother want most for her son? Proverbs 31 gives us a glimpse:
She wants him to invest his strength in righteousness, not waste it on destructive paths. She warns against vices—lust, pride, drunkenness—that can ruin even kings. And she desires for him to find a wife of noble character: one who is trustworthy, good, and a true partner in life and faith.
Genesis reminds us that God Himself declared it is not good for man to be alone. He designed companionship, not just for comfort, but for mutual support in pursuing His will.
As I read Proverbs 31 today, I couldn’t help but think of the kind of woman I want to be—a woman of noble character. A woman whose life reflects honesty, kindness, strength, and godly wisdom. A woman who blesses her family, uplifts her community, and pursues righteousness above all else.
This passage inspires me to remember that true beauty and worth aren’t found in outward things—they’re found in the noble character that comes from walking closely with God.
