Colossians 4:1
“Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven.”
TL;DR: We all have influence over someone—whether as a leader, employer, parent, or customer. God calls us to treat others with fairness, generosity, and humility, remembering we too serve a Master in Heaven.
At first glance, Colossians 4:1 might seem outdated or not applicable: “Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair…”
But today, the message hit differently.
This verse isn’t just about the ancient context—it’s about how we treat anyone who helps or serves us in everyday life.
In a world that often overlooks the unseen helpers—servers, drivers, cleaners, assistants—it’s easy to miss opportunities to reflect the heart of Christ.
I’ve been traveling recently, and I noticed something simple but important: I often don’t carry cash, and in a cashless society, that means I miss chances to tip generously or bless someone who has served me well.
Yesterday, while biking, I found myself stranded and a kind stranger gave me a ride. I didn’t have any cash to offer her, but I prayed over her. She told me that helping me actually blessed her too—but still, I wished I could have given more.
That moment reminded me:
Generosity isn’t just about money—it’s about mindset.
But when we can give financially, practically, or verbally—we should.
Why? Because we are all under the care of a greater Master in Heaven. One who has dealt with us abundantly, kindly, and sacrificially. Our response to that grace should be reflected in how we treat others, especially those who serve or support us.
So today, take a moment to:
-
Be fair and kind to those who work for or with you
-
Go the extra mile to show honor and appreciation
-
Be a generous helper to others when they’re in need
It’s not just a transaction—it’s an opportunity to live out the Gospel.
