2 Peter 2:19
“They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him.”2 Peter 1:5-7
“For this reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.”
TL;DR:
Sin can feel pleasurable for a moment but always leads to destruction. Freedom comes when we intentionally repent and pursue godliness instead of letting sinful desires master us.
When I was deep in the pit of my alcoholism, I was truly a slave to sin. It controlled my choices, my health, and my joy. The same can happen with any obsession—whether it’s alcohol, food, approval, lust, or greed. If sin wasn’t pleasurable for a moment, we wouldn’t do it! But the temporary pleasure always leads to emptiness and death.
The good news? We don’t have to stay slaves. Christ sets us free! But that freedom requires intentional choices. For me, I can’t just say “don’t drink”—I need to go to an AA meeting. I can’t just say “don’t overeat”—I need to flush the chocolate and go for a walk. Avoiding sin is not enough. I must actively pursue Christ-like behaviors that bring health, joy, and peace.
When I only focus on the behavior I want to stop, my desire for it actually grows. But when I pursue godliness—through prayer, Scripture, service, and community—my heart shifts toward what is life-giving instead of life-draining.
Today, ask yourself: What has mastered me? If the answer is something other than Christ, it’s time to repent, release it, and pursue godliness. God has already equipped you with everything you need to live a holy, healthy, and happy life.
