Matthew 7:1-5:
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”
TL;DR: When offering or receiving counsel, use God’s word as your foundation. Avoid judging others while ignoring your own struggles. Be honest, transparent, and biblical in supporting one another through life’s challenges.
Have you ever tried to give someone advice about an issue you’re struggling with yourself? It’s tempting to want to help others, but as Jesus reminds us in Matthew 7:1-5, we must first address the “plank” in our own eye before trying to remove the “speck” in someone else’s.
This doesn’t mean we can’t give or receive counsel—it means we need to be transparent and humble in how we do it. Be honest about your struggles and share how you’ve tried to apply God’s word in your life. What worked? What didn’t? What hindered you? True, helpful counsel comes not from our opinions but from the truth of God’s word, which always works.
We are all flawed. We all wrestle with sin. But when we use the Bible as our foundation, we can offer counsel that uplifts and aligns with God’s will. Be a good counselor by rooting your guidance in Scripture and speaking truth with love and humility.
Likewise, when you seek counsel, be discerning. Make sure your counselor isn’t ignoring their own “plank” while advising you. Look for someone who is transparent about their struggles and committed to God’s truth. Remember, God’s word is the best mirror and counsel we will ever find.
Today, let’s encourage one another to give and receive advice wisely. Let’s support each other with honesty, humility, and the unchanging truth of Scripture.
May we all grow in wisdom, guided by God’s word, as we walk this journey together.
