Proverbs 22:24-25
“Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared.”
tl;dr
The people closest to us influence our attitudes, habits, and character. Choose relationships that encourage wisdom, peace, and Godly living.
Be careful who you let into your inner circle.
The people we spend the most time with have a tremendous influence on our thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors. Proverbs gives a clear warning about surrounding ourselves with people who are controlled by anger.
It is easy to believe that our kindness will rub off on them.
Sometimes it does.
But often, if we are not careful, their anger, negativity, and unhealthy habits begin to rub off on us instead.
That is why Scripture encourages wisdom when choosing close relationships. We are called to love everyone, but not everyone should have equal influence in our lives.
A hot-tempered person can draw others into conflict. A chronic complainer can influence attitudes. A negative person can slowly drain joy and peace. Over time, what is repeatedly listened to often becomes what is repeated.
The opposite is true as well.
Spending time with people who pursue God, walk in humility, show kindness, and seek peace encourages those same qualities to grow in our own lives.
Today is a good day to consider who is being allowed into the inner circle.
Are those relationships drawing you closer to God or pulling you away from Him?
Choose friends wisely.
Love everyone.
But be careful who you choose to influence your heart.
