Matthew 18:8–9
“If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands and two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away…”
TL;DR:
Anything—or anyone—that consistently leads you into sin may need to be removed. Protect your soul, even when it costs you a relationship.
These verses are strong. Radical. Uncomfortable.
Jesus is not casually suggesting self-harm—He is emphasizing the seriousness of sin. If something repeatedly pulls you away from God, deal with it decisively.
Today, this makes me think about relationships.
There are people who, when you’re with them, gossip flows easily. Complaining feels normal. Temptations resurface. Old habits quietly return.
When I used to drink, I had “friends” who were really just drinking buddies. If I wanted sobriety, those relationships had to change. Not because I hated them—but because I needed to guard my soul.
It is hard to cut off relationships. It feels lonely. It feels harsh. It can even feel judgmental.
But it is better to walk alone with God than to walk into sin with company.
Not everyone belongs in your inner circle. Not every connection is healthy. If being around someone consistently weakens your convictions, that is not accidental.
Jesus is calling you to choose life.
Sometimes obedience feels like loss. But what you lose in unhealthy connection, you gain in spiritual strength and peace.
Better to enter life “maimed” relationally than to compromise your walk with God.
Protect your heart. Guard your soul. Choose holiness over company.
It is better to be alone with God than in bad company together.
