Enjoy What Is: Finding Joy in God’s Way, Not Just Your Own

Psalm 89:15-16
“Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your presence, Lord… They exult in your righteousness.”

TL;DR: Life doesn’t always go our way, but when we trust God’s direction—even in the disappointments—we can experience joy, peace, and purpose in His presence.

Yesterday I was reminded of a moment from high school. I had tried out for the female lead in Jesus Christ Superstar, but I was chosen for the choir instead. I thought that role was beneath me—so I quit.

I missed out on the fun, connection, and opportunity to grow because I didn’t get what I wanted.

Looking back, I see it wasn’t about the choir or the lead—it was about my heart. I let pride and disappointment rob me of joy.

Over the years, that same pattern tried to repeat. When things didn’t go my way, I would pout or pull back. But each time, I was reminded of that younger version of myself who missed the joy of participating because she couldn’t embrace what was.

Psalm 89 teaches us to celebrate God’s presence and righteousness, not our position or circumstances.

God uses both open and closed doors to protect and guide us. When we let go of our expectations and trust Him, even when things don’t look like we planned, we begin to see the beauty in what is—not just what we hoped for.

Today, don’t miss out on joy because something didn’t go your way.

Be inspired to embrace God’s way. Enjoy what is.

“Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your presence, Lord.”
