Feeling Downhearted? Choose a Cheerful Heart Today

Proverbs 17:22
“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”

TL;DR:

When life brings disappointment or physical pain, you still have the power to choose joy. Gratitude shifts your heart, strengthens your spirit, and brings the healing joy of the Lord.

What a fitting verse for today as I’m nursing a broken bone. I woke up feeling a wave of discouragement—a bit of broken-heartedness too. I can’t travel to see my grandson on his birthday. I can’t join my friends and family as they ride in honor of my daughter-in-law’s memorial bicycle event this weekend.

It’s simply too painful right now to leave my leg down for long periods.

Then I read Proverbs 17:22: “A cheerful heart is good medicine.”

It was the nudge I needed. There will always be things that could make us downhearted—loss, pain, limitations—but today I’m making a conscious choice: I choose joy.

I choose to be thankful I have a grandson to celebrate, even from afar.
I choose to be thankful my beautiful daughter-in-law was part of my life.
I choose to be thankful for this very moment, even if it’s a little teary.

This is how I guard my spirit and keep it from being crushed—by focusing on gratitude and letting the joy of the Lord fill my heart.

Today, I encourage you to do the same. Whatever you’re facing, choose a cheerful heart. It’s powerful medicine.
