How to Comfort a Heavy Heart: What Proverbs 25 Teaches About Real Support

Proverbs 25:2, 20
“It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.”

“Like one who takes away a garment on a cold day, or like vinegar poured on soda, is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.”

TL;DR:
You don’t need to have answers for someone in pain—just point them to the One who truly understands.

Proverbs reminds you of two powerful truths:

1. God conceals what He chooses—and you are called to trust Him anyway.
You are not meant to know every detail of what He’s doing. He doesn’t reveal the full plan; He reveals Himself. Your job isn’t to explain—it’s to trust.

2. A “cheerleader” response to a hurting heart can cause more pain.
When someone’s heart is heavy, upbeat clichés or forced positivity feel like vinegar on soda—they sting, they fizz, they make the heart feel worse.
Well-meaning words can land wrong when they try to fix instead of comfort.

When someone you love is hurting, you don’t need to pretend you understand. You don’t need to explain their situation. You don’t need to offer a quick solution.

Just gently point them to Jesus.

Remind them of the hope He promised:
“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Even when nothing makes sense, Jesus stays faithful.
Even when you don’t know the why, you can trust the Who.

You don’t have to sing songs to a heavy heart.
You just have to shine the hope of Jesus into it.
