How to Find Joy in Suffering: Endurance and Patience Through Christ

Colossians 1:10-14
“And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

TL;DR: True endurance and patience—especially in suffering—come through the strength of Christ. He doesn’t just call us to push through, but to do so with joy and gratitude because we’ve already been rescued and redeemed.

This passage in Colossians reminds us of a truth we often overlook: we are strengthened with all power through God’s glorious might. Not just to survive difficult seasons, but to walk through them with endurance, patience, and even joy.

That’s hard to imagine, especially when we’re in the middle of suffering. Endurance and patience usually come with a cost—grief, waiting, uncertainty. But here’s the challenge in verses 11 and 12: we are called not just to endure, but to do so while joyfully giving thanks.

Can we really do that?

Yes, but not on our own. The source of our strength isn’t us—it’s Him. The same God who rescued us from darkness and brought us into His kingdom has equipped us with everything we need to walk through hard times in peace and even praise.

Joy in suffering isn’t about pretending everything is okay. It’s about knowing that because we have redemption and the forgiveness of sins, nothing we face is without purpose—and nothing is faced alone.

So today, if you’re struggling to be patient or feeling like endurance is beyond you, remember this:

  • You have access to His power.
  • You’ve been rescued from darkness.
  • You are called to give thanks joyfully, even now.

Not because your circumstances are easy—but because your Savior is faithful.
