Isaiah 40:8, 29-31
“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever… He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
TL;DR:
Earthly identities fade and change, but your eternal identity as a child of God never will. When life shifts, when dreams pause, or when abilities are taken, God renews your strength and reminds you of who you really are in Christ.
Yesterday I had a follow-up with my surgeon’s office, and the reality is I may not return to the sports I love—bicycling the hills, water skiing, snow skiing, cross-country skiing, and pickleball—for six months to a year.
For much of my life, I’ve found part of my identity in being an athlete. I’ve loved the joy, the competition, and, honestly, the recognition from others when I did well. That kind of affirmation feels good—but it’s fleeting.
In one quick accident, that identity was stripped away. Yet God, in His love, is reminding me: your true identity is unshakable—you are a child of God.
Sports, jobs, roles, and relationships can shift or even disappear. But being a child of the Living God will never change. That’s who you are. That’s who I am. And that’s where we find strength when our earthly identities feel uncertain.
Isaiah reminds us that those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. Not the strength to win medals or perfect a skill, but the kind of strength that keeps us running in faith, walking in perseverance, and soaring on eagle’s wings when life feels too heavy.
So today, if you’re weary or grieving a lost identity, take heart. You are valued beyond measure—not because of what you can do, but because of who you belong to.
Your identity in Christ is eternal. And nothing—no accident, no loss, no season of change—can ever take that away.
