Iron Sharpens Iron: Embracing Truth, Even When It Hurts

Galatians 4:16
“Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?”

TL;DR:

True friendship includes truth-telling. It’s not always easy to hear or speak, but iron sharpens iron—and we grow through honest conversations. Instead of avoiding confrontation, let’s learn to receive and offer truth in love for the sake of spiritual growth.

Iron sharpens iron. It’s a powerful image—one friend making another stronger, sharper, better. And yet… when someone tells me a hard truth? I don’t always react with gratitude. I might throw up walls, get defensive, or silently fume.

“They have some nerve,” I might think.

But deep down, I know they’re right.

I remember when my mom pointed out my drinking problem. I felt angry. Hurt. Even betrayed. But you know what? She was right. She wasn’t trying to hurt me—she was trying to help me. She loved me enough to say what I didn’t want to hear.

That’s real love. That’s real friendship.

Sometimes, a friend will see what we can’t. They’ll call out our blind spots—not to shame us, but to help us grow. I’m not great at confrontation (in fact, I avoid it like the plague), but I’m learning that good friends speak up, even when it’s hard.

And I’m grateful for friends who love me enough to do the same.

No one enjoys being confronted. It stings at first. But when I pause and reflect, I realize the sharpening is a gift. The discomfort is actually a blessing. It’s how God uses people in our lives to shape us into who we’re meant to be.

So today, let’s ask for the courage to be that kind of friend. One who speaks truth in love. And let’s also pray for humble hearts that can receive that truth when it’s given.

Dear Lord, help us to be the iron that sharpens iron—and to be open to the sharpening ourselves. 🙏❤️😇
