Judgy? When God Uses Your Own Life to Teach You

Romans 2:1
“You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.”

TL;DR:
The quickest way to humility is realizing you are capable of the very thing you judge. Let God soften your heart instead of hardening it.

Do you ever feel “judgy”?

More times than you would probably like to admit.

And isn’t it interesting how often you later find yourself in a similar situation—doing, thinking, or wrestling with the very thing you once criticized?

God has a way of keeping you humble when you let His Word guide you.

I remember once feeling very judgmental about someone who chose to put their dog down before leaving for vacation. I quietly labeled it selfish.

Now here I am.

With seven days before I leave town, and my sweet dog—born the very day I quit drinking—is nearing the end of her life. I thought she would have passed by now. She hasn’t.

She struggles to stand. There are ongoing bathroom issues I’ve been managing. My vet assures me she is not in pain. Others have suggested I “put her down.”

And suddenly, I see it differently.

That woman I judged? Maybe she wasn’t selfish. Maybe she didn’t want her dog to suffer without her. Maybe she was trying to be loving in a hard situation.

Funny how perspective shifts when it’s your heart on the line.

Romans 2:1 is not meant to shame you—it is meant to soften you.

Judgment often reveals more about your own blind spots than someone else’s faults.

God is involved in your everyday moments—yes, even in the tender decisions about beloved pets. He uses real life to refine your heart.

Before you judge, pause.
Before you assume, consider.
Before you condemn, remember your own frailty.

Humility opens your eyes. Judgment narrows them.

May you see Him in your moments today.
Especially the ones that stretch your heart.
