Proverbs 12:26 “A righteous man is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.”
TL;DR: Scripture reminds us to be thoughtful about who we allow into our closest relationships. We may want to lift others up, but without healthy boundaries, we can end up being pulled down instead.
Be careful whom you let into your inner circle.
It is easy to assume that our faith-based relationships will always bring out the best in us — that we can pour into someone and raise them up. And sometimes that is true. But if we are honest, the influence does not always flow in the direction we expect. Often, rather than lifting others up, we find ourselves being slowly pulled down.
That is not a pessimistic view of people. It is simply wisdom — the same wisdom Proverbs has been offering for thousands of years. Choosing friends wisely is not about being unkind or closing yourself off. You can still be warm, generous, and caring toward everyone in your life. But guarding your closest relationships is a righteous act, not a selfish one.
Think of it as the difference between being kind and being cautious. The two are not opposites. In fact, setting healthy boundaries in friendships is one of the most loving things you can do — for others and for yourself. When you protect your heart, your faith, and your focus, you are better equipped to genuinely help the people around you.
So take an honest look at your closest relationships. Are they drawing you closer to who you want to be? Are they aligned with your values and your walk with God? Be kind to everyone, but be intentional about who you allow to speak into your life at the deepest level.
Righteous living requires wise and cautious friendships. Scripture says so — and most of us have lived it.
