Leave the Old and Pursue the New (Christian New Year Motivation)

1 Timothy 4:8
“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”

1 Timothy 6:11
“But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.”

James 4:7–8
“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and God will draw near to you.”

TL;DR:
You leave the old behind by actively pursuing the new—filling your mind and heart with what is godly, not obsessing over what you are trying to avoid.

When you want a fresh start, the shift begins in where you direct your focus.
If you keep thinking, “Today I’m not going to…,” you spend the entire day thinking about what you don’t want—and eventually you give in. What you think about grows.

Scripture teaches you to pursue righteousness, not merely avoid sin.
To pursue godliness, not merely resist temptation.
To fill your life with what builds you, instead of fighting what breaks you.

If you want to eat less processed food, don’t fixate on restriction—focus on enjoying nourishing, whole foods.
If you want to leave old thought patterns behind, intentionally choose new thoughts anchored in truth.
If you want to stop returning to what keeps you stuck, pursue the Holy Spirit’s filling and Jesus’ strength instead.

When you draw near to God, He draws near to you.
As you pursue the new, the old loses its grip.

Happy New Year! May this be the year you chase what leads to life.
