Leave the Old, Pursue the New: How to Replace Bad Habits with Healthy Ones Through Faith

Ephesians 4:22 “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”

TL;DR: Breaking a bad habit means more than just stopping — you have to replace it with something better. If you leave a void, something will fill it. Choose intentionally, stay consistent, and let your new habits carry you toward a healthier, faith-centered life.

Put off the old and put on the new. If you want to change old habits and behaviors, you have to replace them with something better — that is the key.

We all have the same 24 hours in a day. When you stop a bad habit that has been consuming your time and energy, you suddenly have a gap. That gap will not stay empty. If you do not intentionally fill it with a new, edifying behavior, that void will pull you right back toward the very thing you were trying to leave behind.

This is not just good advice — it is a faith-based approach to lasting behavior change. Scripture is clear: put off the old self, be made new in the attitude of your mind, and put on the new self. That renewal is active. It requires a replacement, not just a removal.

So today, choose to be healthy and well. Replace old habits with healthy new ones and commit to staying with them. Your mind, your body, and your faith will all be better for it.
