Look for Your Northern Lights: Choosing Joy Over Quarrels

Proverbs 17:14
“Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.”
Philippians 4:5
“Let your gentleness be evident to all, the Lord is near.”
Proverbs 17:22
“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”

TL;DR:
Arguments may feel urgent in the moment, but most fade into insignificance. Choose gentleness, let go of offense, and look for the unexpected beauty—your own Northern lights.

The first time I saw the Northern lights, it wasn’t planned. I had stormed out for a walk on the golf course after a heated argument with my then-husband. Angry and frustrated, I walked into the night—and found myself awestruck by the spectacular glow dancing across the sky. That walk remains one of the most beautiful experiences of my life.

Funny thing is, to this day, I can’t recall what the argument was even about.

How often do we let fleeting offenses rob us of peace? How many battles have we waged with intensity, only to forget the reason we were upset in the first place?

Scripture reminds us that gentleness, joy, and self-restraint are godly traits. Starting a quarrel is like opening a floodgate; once the words are released, they can’t always be taken back. In my life, I’ve experienced the damage of letting anger run unchecked—I’ve also learned the healing that comes with choosing to let it go.

A cheerful heart truly is good medicine. We can all choose to walk away from arguments today, to rejoice in the Lord, and to let our gentleness be evident to all.

There’s peace, beauty, and clarity waiting for you—your own version of Northern lights—if you pause long enough to look up.
