Love the Law: Embracing God’s Ways Without Shame

Psalm 119:165
“Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.”
Romans 3:23
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”

TL;DR:
Loving God’s law brings peace, but none of us can keep it perfectly. That’s why grace through Jesus is everything. Try your best—and when you fall, remember you’re already forgiven.

Have you ever wondered why some people are drawn to rigid religious systems or even cults? I think part of the appeal lies in the structure—there’s comfort in knowing what’s expected, in striving for good behavior, in being surrounded by others who are doing the same.

In AA, we share a common goal: stay sober and live better than we did when addiction ran our lives. It’s comforting to walk among people trying to live rightly. Psalm 119 shows us a deep love for God’s law—His precepts. And honestly, I get it. When I’m walking well, when I’m choosing honesty, peace, and self-control—it feels good. It feels safe.

But I mess up. We all do.

That’s where grace steps in.

God’s Word teaches us how to live. He puts good desires in our hearts, and He gives us mercy and grace when we miss the mark. The more I embrace His Word, the more I want to live it out—not to earn His love, but because I already have it.

There’s safety in walking in His ways—avoiding deceit, jealousy, and selfishness. But there’s even more safety in the truth that when we fall short (and we will), we are picked up again. We are forgiven, we are restored. That is the powerful gift of Jesus.

Today, love the law—but rest in grace. You’re never walking alone.
