Rudeness as a Christian? Let the Overflow of Your Heart Be Kindness

Luke 6:45
“The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart his mouth speaks.”

TL;DR:

Even as believers, we can hurt others unintentionally—especially when we’re frustrated. But the words we speak reflect what’s in our hearts. Choose to let the overflow be kindness and humility, even when you don’t feel it. Own your mistakes. Apologize sincerely. Grow in grace.

A dear friend recently shared that one of her coworkers described me as being “very rude.” I was taken back. Rude? Me?

I don’t think of myself that way. I like to believe I’m kind and thoughtful. But when I reflected on the moment she mentioned, I remembered—I had been frustrated before I even entered the store. And I let that frustration spill out onto someone who didn’t deserve it.

The clerk was kind. She was doing her job. And I, someone who calls herself a Christian, responded with rudeness.

It’s embarrassing to admit. But even more than that—it’s convicting. I didn’t think I had that in me, but Luke 6:45 reminds us:

“Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.”

I had allowed frustration to build up in my heart, and it came out through my words.

I’m incredibly thankful my friend had the courage to lovingly call me out. Without her, I might never have realized how my actions affected someone else.

I’m going back to that store. And I’m going to apologize to the clerk sincerely. No excuses. Just the truth: “I’m sorry. I was frustrated, and I took it out on you. You didn’t deserve that. I was wrong.”

Sometimes it’s easy to be rude to people in customer service. We’re in a hurry, distracted, dealing with our own problems. But none of that gives us the right to treat someone with anything less than kindness and respect.

So today, may the overflow of your heart be love, peace, and gentleness—even when you don’t feel it. And when you mess up (because we all do), be quick to acknowledge it, make it right, and grow from it.

Because being a Christian isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being real, repentant, and rooted in love. 🙏❤️😇
