Stop Sinning or Something Worse Will Happen: A Lesson in Breaking Destructive Cycles

John 5:14 “Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, ‘See you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.'”

TL;DR: Breaking destructive cycles is hard, but God’s discipline is an act of love. Each day is a new opportunity to submit to God, resist temptation, and fill yourself with the love of Jesus before consequences grow worse.

“Stop sinning or something worse will happen to you.” That verse hits hard. For me, it immediately brings to mind my own experience with quitting drinking.

The pattern was always the same. Something bad would happen as a result of drinking, and I would stop out of fear. Then, little by little, the fear would fade. I would start to think maybe I could try it again — maybe this time it would be different, maybe this time it wouldn’t end badly. It never was different. It always just got worse.

I hope my last bad experience is enough to last me a lifetime. What I have is today. And today, I can choose to stop sinning.

Of course, that is easier said than done — perfection is impossible. But I can try my best. I can fill my life with the love of Jesus instead of filling it with the things that pull me down. I can aim to be a God-pleaser rather than a people-pleaser, and I can lean into what James lays out so clearly:

James 4:7-8 “Submit yourselves, then to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and He will come near to you.”

That is the real invitation. Submitting to God and resisting temptation is not about white-knuckling your way through life — it is about drawing closer to Him so that the pull of destructive habits loses its grip.

God loves each of us so much that He takes the time to discipline us. That is not punishment for the sake of punishment. That is a Father who cares enough to let us feel the weight of our choices so we turn back to Him. If we keep walking down the wrong path, the consequences keep growing. That is not God being cruel — that is God being faithful.

Today, let’s do our best to break destructive cycles through faith, submit to God, and take one step closer to Him. He will meet you there.
