Proverbs 13:10
“Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.”
TL;DR:
Pride resists correction, but wisdom grows when we humbly receive advice. Sometimes the very words we don’t want to hear are the ones that save us.
I am a redeemed child of God, but part of my story is that I’m also a recovering alcoholic. I don’t always love that label—it feels like identifying with a negative part of my life. But it’s a reminder of truth. If I forget that I have a serious allergy to alcohol and think I can have “just one,” it could end very badly.
That’s why I lean into the advice of friends and fellow AA members. Accepting the label keeps me humble, and humility helps me stay open to wise counsel. Pride closes our ears, but humility lets us hear.
I wouldn’t be sober today if I hadn’t learned to take advice—even when it wasn’t easy to hear. I’m still a work in progress. Sometimes I want to dismiss the intelligence others offer me, but when I truly listen, I grow.
Maybe today you’re hearing advice you don’t really want to take. Pause. Consider it. Test it. Wisdom is often tucked inside those hard-to-hear words. Remember, pride breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.
