Turn Away and Stay Turned: Finding Strength to Leave Old Ways Behind

Jonah 3:9-10 “Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from His fierce anger so that we will not perish. When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, He had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction He has threatened.”

TL;DR: It is easy to turn from destructive habits when consequences are staring you down, only to drift back into the same old patterns. God calls us to something more lasting — keep turning, keep pressing forward, and trust that His compassion meets you every step of the way.

Have you ever walked away from a harmful habit or destructive pattern, felt the relief of a fresh start, and then found yourself sliding right back into those same old ways? You are not alone, and there is no shame in that honest question.

The people of Nineveh in Jonah 3 faced real consequences for their choices. When they turned from their evil ways, God saw it and responded with compassion. That is a powerful and deeply personal picture of what repentance and lasting change can look like.

But here is the challenge most of us know all too well: turning away once is not always enough. Breaking old habits and staying free takes daily intention. It takes pressing forward even when the pull of familiar patterns is strong.

If you are on a faith and fitness journey — whether that means working on your physical health, your mental well-being, or your spiritual life — this same truth applies. Real transformation is not a one-time event. It is a commitment to continual growth and renewal, choosing again and again to move toward the high calling God has placed on your life.

Whatever you are facing right now, be encouraged. God’s compassion is not a reward for being perfect. It is available to those who keep turning back to Him, no matter how many times the road gets hard. Turn away from what is holding you back, and stay turned.
