We Can Each Be Wrong: Choosing Empathy, Patience, and Open-Mindedness in Conflict

Proverbs 29:11 “A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.”

Proverbs 19:11 “A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.”

Proverbs 12:16 “Fools show their annoyance at once, but the prudent overlook an insult.”

TL;DR: It is best not to take offense in the first place. Think before you speak, choose empathy over anger, and stay open to the possibility that you might not have the full picture. We can each be wrong.

It is best not to take offense in the first place. That is easier said than done, of course — but it is worth aiming for. Thinking before you speak and holding your anger before it spills out can change the entire direction of a conversation.

Most people are simply doing the best they can with what they have. When you lead with that assumption, choosing empathy and compassion becomes a little more natural, even when someone says or does something that rubs you the wrong way.

Controlling your anger is not about suppressing how you feel — it is about being wise enough to pause before reacting. That pause is where patience and emotional wisdom live. And according to Proverbs, that patience is actually a sign of real wisdom, not weakness.

Educate each other and stay teachable. Seek common ground. Learning to agree to disagree with grace is one of the most underrated relationship skills there is. Most of us have solid reasons for why we think the way we think — and so does the person across from you.

We each can be wrong. Keeping an open mind and seeing things from another person’s perspective does not mean you have to abandon your own. It just means you are willing to consider that you might not have the whole picture. That kind of humility is where real growth — and real connection — begins.
