Ephesians 5:18-20
“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
TL;DR:
You don’t have to drink alcohol to be intoxicated by something that pulls you away from God. Whether it’s adrenaline, approval-seeking, or unhealthy indulgence, anything that clouds your judgment can take His place. Choose to be filled with the Spirit, not with counterfeit substitutes.
I used this verse often in my early sobriety. At the time, it spoke directly to my struggle with alcohol, which distorted my judgment and stole my peace.
But now, I realize that “getting drunk” isn’t just about wine. There are other intoxicants—things like adrenaline rushes, approval seeking, overindulgence in food—that can take over my heart and cloud my thinking. They may not come in a bottle, but they can still lead me away from God’s best for my life.
Today, I’m asking myself: What am I letting rule my heart? Is it something that draws me closer to God, or will it eventually lead to my destruction?
The verse reminds me to be filled with the Spirit—to let worship, gratitude, and God’s truth be what stirs my soul. Because unlike any worldly high, His presence leaves me steady, clear, and at peace.
