What to Pray: A Powerful Prayer from Ephesians 1

Ephesians 1:17-20
“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and His incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of His mighty strength, which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms.”

TL;DR:

If you’re not sure what to pray for yourself or for others, Ephesians 1:17-20 offers the perfect prayer—asking God to bring wisdom, revelation, hope, and deep faith in Christ’s power.

Sometimes, when someone asks me to pray for them, I say “I will”—but if I don’t pray right then, I can forget. Other times, if I’m frustrated, my prayers can lean selfishly toward asking God to bring someone around to my way of thinking.

That’s why I love Ephesians 1:17-20. It gives us a powerful, Christ-centered prayer to pray over ourselves and others:

  • Pray for the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that we may know God better.

  • Pray that the eyes of our hearts may be enlightened, so we may know the hope to which He has called us.

  • Pray for deeper understanding of the riches of His glorious inheritance.

  • Pray to experience His incomparably great power, the same power that raised Jesus from the dead.

When we pray this over our loved ones—or even over ourselves—we’re asking for something far greater than temporary fixes. We’re asking that the Holy Spirit fill hearts, deepen faith, and strengthen trust in Jesus.

Because when we truly trust Him in all things, we find healing and peace—even in the middle of our worst-case scenarios.
