What’s Your Idol? Seeking God First

Matthew 6:33
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

1 John 5:21
“Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.”

1 John 5:5
“Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.”

TL;DR:

An idol is anything we place above God—worry, fear, control, or even our own plans. True peace comes when we let go of our idols and seek first His kingdom.

What’s your idol?

For me, I sometimes realize my idols aren’t material things—they’re my fears and worries. When I hold onto something so tightly that I refuse to trust God with it, that becomes my idol.

When “getting my way” becomes more important than trusting God’s way, I’m no longer seeking His kingdom—I’m seeking Kimberly’s kingdom. And every time, it fills me with anxiety and fear, not peace and faith.

There’s an old saying: “Let go and let God.” But with my type-A personality, I often do the opposite—I hold on tighter. Can you relate?

The truth is, idols come in many forms. They’re not always statues or possessions—they can be our desires, our control, our fears, or even our relationships. They can be difficult to recognize, but here’s the key question to ask yourself:

👉 “What am I seeking first?”

If the answer is anything other than God’s kingdom and righteousness, then that thing might be your idol.

Today, let’s remember the promise of Matthew 6:33: when we seek Him first, everything else falls into place.
