Proverbs 13:20 “He who walks with the wise grows wise, but the companion of fools suffer harm.” ….14:1 “The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears it down.”
TL;DR: The people closest to you have more influence over your life than you might realize. Be intentional about building faith-centered friendships and surrounding yourself with people who help you grow wise, not foolish.
Walk with the wise and grow wise. Walk with fools and become foolish. It really is that simple — and that serious.
Be careful with the people occupying your inner circle. When I quit drinking, I needed to find sober friends. That was not optional — it was survival. Today, as I am trying to build a God-honoring life, I have to be just as intentional about pursuing friendships that do the same.
It is so easy to fall into the snare of seeking the wrong things, especially when the wrong things feel comfortable or familiar. Choosing wise relationships takes real effort. It means being honest about who is shaping you and in which direction.
Think about a football team. Every player has to work together for a victory. No one wins alone. The same is true in this life. We need faith-driven community around us — teammates who challenge us to be wise, not foolish, and who are building something meaningful right alongside us.
The wise woman builds her house. The foolish one tears it down with her own hands. That image is worth sitting with for a moment. The people we surround ourselves with either help us build or quietly help us tear down, often without us even noticing.
So here is the question worth asking today: what God-honoring friendships will you invest in? Who in your life is helping you grow, and who might be pulling you in the wrong direction? Surrounding yourself with wise people is not snobbery — it is stewardship of the one life you have been given.
