Romans 11:6 “And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.”
TL;DR: You don’t have to earn God’s love — you simply receive it. When you truly understand His unconditional grace, good works flow naturally out of gratitude, not obligation.
Grace versus works makes me think of, “We love Him, because He first loved us.”
When someone loves you and is genuinely good to you, you naturally want to be good to that person. There is something so wonderful about being on the receiving end of unconditional love. You don’t earn it. You receive it.
When I receive such a beautiful gift, it’s my heart’s desire to respond in kind.
That’s my favorite way to think about doing good works for God. Not out of striving to earn His love or approval, but because we are so overflowing with gratitude that we want to give back our very best. That’s the difference between faith-driven action and performance-driven religion — one comes from freedom, the other from fear.
Understanding God’s grace versus human effort is genuinely freeing. You are not on a treadmill trying to prove yourself worthy. You are already loved. That truth changes how you move, how you serve, and how you live.
I hope this perspective encourages you today and motivates you to simply love God back with an abundance of joy.
