Zeal Without Knowledge?

Proverbs 19:2-3
“It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way. A man’s own folly ruins his life, yet his heart rages against the Lord.”

tl;dr
Enthusiasm is not enough. Godly wisdom requires prayer, patience, and discernment before making important decisions.

These verses are really striking me this morning.

I can be very impulsive. When I make a quick decision, I often feel compelled to stick with it because I want to be true to my word. Sometimes that is a good thing. Other times, it can keep me moving in a direction I should have taken more time to consider.

“It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way.”

What a powerful reminder.

I often have plenty of zeal. I get excited about ideas, opportunities, and possibilities. The challenge is slowing down long enough to seek wisdom before acting.

When I was younger, I did not fully realize how much my decisions could affect the people around me. Now I understand that choices rarely impact only one person. They often affect family, friends, and those God has entrusted to my care.

Today, I pray that I can exhale.

That I can pause.

That I can pray.

That I can search God’s Word.

That I can seek His wisdom before making an impulsive decision.

The world often tells us to follow our hearts. Scripture encourages us to seek God’s heart.

Before making a decision, I want to ask myself a few questions:

Am I doing this out of love or selfishness?

Am I serving God, man, or money?

Am I seeking God’s will or simply looking for confirmation of what I already want?

Those questions have a way of bringing clarity.

I hope this helps today too.

Be blessed in all you think, say, and do.
