Call Upon the Lord, and You Will Be Saved

There is a simple promise in Joel 2:32 that has stayed with me deeply:

And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Everyone.

Not just pastors. Not just people who seem spiritually strong. Not just people who have everything together. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

I have held on to that truth in both crisis and gratitude, in weakness and in joy. It is not just a nice Bible verse to me. It is something I have lived.

What it means to call on the name of the Lord

Calling on the name of the Lord does not have to be fancy. It does not require polished words or a perfect prayer. At its heart, it is sincere dependence on Jesus.

Sometimes it is as simple as saying, “Jesus, I need your help.”

That cry for help matters. The sincerity matters. The faith matters. When you truly call upon the Lord, you are turning to the One who saves, comforts, hears, and responds.

This is one of the most beautiful things about faith. You do not have to perform. You do not have to prove yourself first. You call on Him, and He meets you there.

A moment when this promise became real to me

When my twins were born 34 years ago, my uterus ruptured. It was a life-threatening emergency, and they rushed me to the operating room. In that moment, I heard the medical team call for clergy.

I had EMT training, so I understood enough to know what was happening. I could hear my vitals. I knew things were not going well. I knew I was in serious danger of leaving this world.

At first, I remember blurting out, “I’m Lutheran. Get me a Lutheran pastor.” But what mattered most was not the denomination I named in that moment. What mattered most was what came next.

I called on the name of the Lord.

I said, “Jesus, I need your help.”

That was it. A sincere cry. A direct call to Him.

The peace of God in the middle of crisis

Immediately, I was surrounded by a warm white light. I felt a peace that surpassed all understanding. It was not the kind of peace this world gives. It was deeper than fear, deeper than pain, deeper than the medical emergency unfolding around me.

In that moment, I simply knew that I was going home to heaven.

Then I heard a voice say, “You can’t go yet. Those twins need you.”

The next thing I knew, I woke up in recovery.

To be honest, I felt disappointed at first. I had experienced a glimpse of heaven and the overwhelming peace of God, and suddenly I was back here again. Then I remembered the words I had heard: “Those twins need you.”

There was still work for me to do. There was still purpose in my being here.

Why this story matters

I do not share that experience to say I am special. I share it because I am not.

The promise is not reserved for a select few. Joel 2:32 says everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. That includes ordinary people in ordinary lives and people in extraordinary moments of need.

If you are in a hard place, you can call on Him.

If you are afraid, you can call on Him.

If you are overwhelmed, exhausted, uncertain, or desperate, you can call on Him.

You do not need a dramatic setting for this verse to be true. You just need a heart that turns toward Jesus.

Calling on the Lord in everyday life

Calling on the name of the Lord is not only for emergencies.

Yes, I call on Him when I need help. There are many moments when I simply pray, “Jesus, I need some help.” That is part of a real relationship with God. He is not only for the biggest moments of life. He is for the daily ones too.

But I also call on Him in the good times.

When I see a beautiful sunrise, I thank Him.

When I look at my beautiful grandchildren, I thank Him.

When something is good, lovely, or praiseworthy, I call on the name of the Lord in gratitude.

That is an important part of living by faith. We do not only seek God when we are in trouble. We also praise Him when we are blessed.

Faith, health, and wellness

For me, this habit of calling on the Lord is not a small spiritual add-on. It is foundational. It has become part of the basis for my health and wellness.

When your life is anchored in prayer, dependence on Jesus, and gratitude toward God, it changes the way you carry your burdens. It changes how you face suffering. It changes how you receive joy.

Calling on the Lord brings:

  • Peace in anxious moments
  • Help when you feel weak
  • Perspective when life feels overwhelming
  • Gratitude for the good gifts in front of you
  • Spiritual strength for daily living

I truly believe it can become a powerful basis for your health and wellness too.

How to begin if you need the Lord today

If you are wondering where to start, start simply.

You can call on the name of the Lord right where you are. No performance. No complicated formula. Just honesty and faith.

Here are a few simple ways to begin:

  1. Be sincere. Speak to Jesus honestly. Tell Him what you need.

  2. Ask for help. Even a simple prayer like “Jesus, I need your help” is enough.

  3. Call on Him daily. Do not wait for a crisis. Make it a habit.

  4. Thank Him in the good times. Notice beauty, family, provision, and joy, and give Him praise.

  5. Trust His response. He hears you, even if the answer does not look exactly the way you expected.

The promise still stands

Joel 2:32 is still true:

And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

That promise is for the person in a hospital bed and for the person standing in the kitchen trying to make it through the day.

It is for the person facing fear and for the person overflowing with gratitude.

It is for all of us.

So call on Him.

Call on the Lord when you are in need. Call on the Lord when your heart is full of thanks. Call on the Lord when you do not know what to do next.

Put on your faith, because when you do, you are truly fit for anything.

Be fit, be blessed, have a phenomenal day, and call upon the name of the Lord.
