Give Honor and Respect Even When You Don’t Feel Like It: A Faith-Based Perspective

Romans 13:7 “Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes if revenue then revenue; if respect then respect, if honor then honor.”

Romans 13:14 “Rather cloth yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think how to gratify the desires of your sinful nature.”

TL;DR: It is not always easy to show honor and respect, especially toward people we disagree with. But as believers, we are called to live by faith rather than feelings, and to clothe ourselves with Christ in every interaction.

In the natural, we may not “feel” like giving honor and respect to various individuals, especially when we disagree with them. That feeling is real, and it is human. But here is the thing: we are not called to conduct ourselves by our emotions. We are called to clothe ourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ.

That is a different standard entirely. Living out your faith in everyday relationships means choosing honor even when it is hard, and extending respect even when it is not returned. It is less about how someone makes you feel and more about who you are choosing to be.

Choosing respect over resentment is one of the quieter, more powerful forms of spiritual discipline. It does not mean you agree with someone, or that you excuse harmful behavior. It means you are walking in faith, not feelings, and trusting that God calls us to a higher standard in how we treat one another.

So today, what does it look like for you to clothe yourself with Christ in a relationship or situation where honor does not come easily? That question is worth sitting with.
