Proverbs 29:23 “A man’s pride brings him low, but a man of lowly spirit gains honor.”
TL;DR: Pride is not just about showing off — it is also about insisting on your own way. When you walk in humility and trust God’s direction over your own, you move forward steadily and with purpose, just like the tortoise.
I used to think of pride in the Bible only one way — the loud, look-at-me kind. But pride also shows up quietly, in the need for things to go my way. That is a version of pride that is easy to miss, and even easier to justify.
Walking humbly with God does not mean being small or weak. Lowly in spirit does not mean lowly. In fact, it can mean quite the opposite. Often the most humble person in the room is also the quietest, the most grounded, and the most genuinely knowledgeable. There is a quiet strength in biblical humility that pride simply cannot produce.
When I run ahead in my pride, I end up working incredibly hard and going nowhere. When I walk in humility, trusting God’s plan over my own, I move slowly — but I actually get to where He is leading me. That is where the tortoise and the hare come in. Sometimes I am the tortoise. Sometimes, honestly, I am the hare. The steady, humble walk always wins.
It is so easy to say. It is so hard to actually do.
Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God.”
Are you striving in your own strength, beating your head against the wall? That is often pride at work — the insistence that your way, your timing, and your effort should be enough. The invitation here is simple: turn it over. Letting go of control and trusting God is not defeat. It is wisdom. It is the tortoise choosing the steady path and finishing the race.
