John 10:10
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
TL;DR: Anything we place above God—whether addiction, control, or comfort—can steal the life Jesus wants to give us. But when we put Christ first, we can live in the freedom and abundance He died to provide.
There is a thief at work in the world and in our lives.
And he’s not just a small-time nuisance—he comes to steal, kill, and destroy.
That’s what addiction does.
That’s what misplaced priorities do.
That’s what happens when we chase anything more than we chase God.
Jesus offers the exact opposite. He came so that we could live—really live—with peace, purpose, and abundance.
For much of my life, I battled addictions.
Not just one—many: anorexia, bulimia, alcoholism, codependency, obsessive exercise.
They were my comforts, my coping mechanisms, the things I leaned on instead of Jesus.
And though they may have offered temporary relief, in the end, they did exactly what John 10:10 warns about:
They stole joy, killed peace, and destroyed the fullness of life God wanted for me.
In recovery, I learned that whatever I place above sobriety, I’ll lose.
But even deeper than that—whatever I place above Christ, I’ll lose, too.
So today, I choose to enjoy my new life in Christ.
Not just avoid my old habits—but embrace the life He died to give me.
That takes intentionality.
It means choosing His truth over my cravings.
His peace over my patterns.
His Spirit over my self-will.
It’s not easy—but it’s worth it.
If there’s anything in your life that’s stealing, killing, or destroying your joy—
recognize it for what it is.
And then let it go.
Because the Savior of the world is offering you something better.
Abundant life. Fullness. Freedom.
Put Christ first—because He is enough.
