Romans 8:5–6
“Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace.”
TL;DR: If you’re experiencing anxiety, it may be time to examine where your focus is. Romans 8:6 reminds us that peace comes when our minds are set on the Spirit, not on selfish desires or things we cannot control. Let God’s peace guide your decisions.
Life and peace—that’s what I want.
That’s what I believe we all want.
Yesterday, I experienced a wave of extreme anxiety. It hit me so hard that I’m still reflecting on it. And in that reflection, this truth became very clear: I was pursuing something that wasn’t God’s will for me.
When I am in sync with God’s Spirit, reading His Word, and making decisions based on what He says is best, I feel peace—even when the path is difficult. But when I choose to chase after something just for personal pleasure, or when I try to control something that’s not mine to control, that’s when anxiety sets in. That’s when peace disappears.
Romans 8:6 says it plainly:
“The mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace.”
So if you’re feeling anxious today, I encourage you to ask yourself,
“What is my part in this?”
Are you trying to steer something that should be surrendered? Are you holding on to your will more tightly than God’s?
One phrase I often tell others is, “Follow the peace of God.” And I have to take my own advice, too.
Today, I’m praying through the Serenity Prayer:
“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
Let that be your prayer, too.
