Choose Wisely: Be a Good Friend and Surround Yourself with Godly Influence

Proverbs 26:4–5
“Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be like him yourself.”

TL;DR:

Be careful who you let close to your heart. While we’re called to love everyone, not everyone should have influence over our lives. Surround yourself with godly friends—those who help you grow, not pull you down.

Yesterday, I played pickleball with a kindergarten teacher, and it reminded me of a sign I saw in my sons’ classroom years ago:
“How to Pick Friends.”
It listed what makes a good friend—honesty, kindness, generosity, and being a good citizen. And then what makes a bad friend—selfishness, gossiping, lying…

That message has stuck with me.

The truth is, we tend to mirror the people we spend time with. That’s why it’s so important to choose our inner circle wisely. If we allow negative, ungodly influences too close, we often end up being pulled down rather than lifting others up.

Scripture warns us clearly:

“Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be like him yourself.” (Proverbs 26:4)

Now, don’t get me wrong—we’re called to love and serve all kinds of people, but we need to be careful who we let influence our thoughts, behaviors, and decisions. The people we allow close to our hearts should help us grow in Christ, not compromise our values.

Be the kind of friend you want to have, and surround yourself with those who reflect the character of Jesus. If you do, you’ll find yourself becoming more loving, joyful, patient, and strong.

Let’s all be reminded today: Be a good friend—and be careful who you choose.
