Proverbs 18:2
“Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions.”
TL;DR:
Wisdom listens before speaking. Slow down, understand first, then offer truth that actually helps.
You know exactly what it feels like to be the fool—quick to talk, slow to listen, ready to offer opinions before you truly understand the heart of the person in front of you.
That rush to speak isn’t wisdom. It’s pride.
Wisdom is applied knowledge.
And you can’t apply what you don’t take time to understand.
When you slow down, ask questions, listen deeply, and repeat back what you heard, you show humility and love. You create space for clarity. You avoid assumptions. And you’ll know how to respond with the right Scripture and the right prayer instead of throwing out verses that don’t touch the real issue.
For example:
If a friend shares fear about their future, don’t immediately launch into advice.
First, understand.
Then gently bring God’s Word to the exact point of their pain.
1. Share Scripture
Choose a verse that directly speaks to their fear.
Guide them to read it in their own Bible so they can stand on it themselves.
2. Pray specifically
“Lord Jesus, help my friend release fear and receive Your peace. Guard their thoughts and fill them with Your courage.”
You love people best when you understand them first.
Be that friend today—slow to speak, quick to understand, and ready to pray.
